VoyageMIA Magazine

How exciting to have my story featured by VoyageMIA magazine!

Here’s part of the interview:

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dilenia “Dee” Batista.

Dilenia “Dee”, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Dillen & Ari is the studio of Dee Batista, a designer and letterer based in Miami (formerly New York). Known for her clean and playful writing style, Dee has created work for clients like Eccolo Ltd and A+E Networks’ Lifetime Latin America:

“Growing up I recall drawing letters on everything from my school backpack to bulleting boards—most people seemed to love my penmanship which came naturally—  to me, it was as easy a pie! Time went by and I started to pay attention to stationery, logos, signs and an array of materials that featured hand lettering and found myself more and more attracted to this world of beautiful writing although, in the back of my mind, I thought it was impossible to ever get there.

After researching about this world of lettering & modern calligraphy, I decided to open my Etsy shop and see how it goes, went on to sell my handmade and hand-lettered lifestyle items on that platform and later at local craft shows.
I then attended the National Stationery Show in NYC which is where my vision expanded to licensing my work.

Today, I’m proud to announce that my design studio, DILLEN & ARI became official at the beginning of 2018 offering mainly, but not limited to custom hand lettering for commercial services used for advertising, promotion, product packaging, etc. As well as my very own product design.

But when life happens and you find your “why” and a reason to face your fears and just “go for it!”, nothing can stop you. You find a way to turn off that negative voice that tells you can’t do something, especially when someone’s watching you: My two children, Dillen and Arianna are my inspiration behind everything – even my business’ name!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create custom hand-lettered art mainly for the purpose of commercial use.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?

Life itself is a challenge—and that’s the fun part! Can you image how boring it will be if everything was already solved for us? Being a self-taught artist with absolutely no art background and no schooling in the world of design, it is definitely challenging for me, but that is something already included in the package of life. Hard work pays off, as I’ve been able to find out for myself.

I currently work a corporate job during the day and have two beautiful children to take care of. You can say, I have a lot on my plate— and with the large array of talented artist out there who are professional creatives, it would be easy for someone like me to back down. But the beauty of being an artist the uniqueness we possess — although a challenging field, there is room for everyone and in the end, hard work beats talent.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
On my Instagram account, I present a selection of series where I hand-letter motivational quotes as a way of not only showcasing my hand lettering but also encouraging my followers to dare to dream and keep on going.

A+E NETWORKS: LIFETIME LATAM

I’m excited to share my collaboration with A&E Networks Latin America: Lifetime, a channel and brand embodied by its inclusivity and empowerment of all women.  I developed a hand lettering series for social media marketing purposes of their movie stunt, “The Kennedys: After Camelot” and “The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe”. Both Lifetime movie specials exemplify strong women and are represented in the lettering series through some of Jackie Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe’s powerful quotes. This was an exciting project as Dillen & Ari was able to showcase its talent in the entertainment space of a Latin American market.

The Journey Begins

On May 2018, I decided to go for it and showcase my hand-lettering. Shortly after doing so, I got my first licensing deal with Eccolo Ltd.; a family-owned company that manufactures and distributes stationery goods. My ‘DARE TO DREAM’ hand lettered design will soon be seen at department stores not only all over the U.S. but also in Europe – I am beyond excited! It’s definitely a great feeling. This marks the beginning of many more opportunities to come.
